The Trench & Seven Mosques

On the western side of Madinah lies an area associated with one of the defining events of the Prophetic biography: the Battle of the Confederates, commonly known as the Battle of the Trench. In the fifth year after the Hijrah, as the confederate forces approached Madinah, Salman Al-Farsi suggested digging a defensive trench along the city’s exposed approaches. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions participated in its construction.

Today, the area contains a group of small historic mosques collectively known as the Seven Mosques. Among the best known is Al-Fath Mosque, alongside mosques bearing the names of several companions. The sites have long been associated in local historical tradition with the wider landscape of the Battle of the Trench.

The surrounding geography helps visitors understand the events in context. Seeing the mountains, elevated terrain and approaches to the city makes the defensive strategy easier to visualize. The experience is therefore best approached not simply as a visit to several mosques, but as an opportunity to understand the story and landscape of Al-Khandaq.
