Al-Baqi Cemetery
Madinah’s historic cemetery since the Prophetic era, where thousands of the Prophet’s ﷺ companions and members of his family were buried, located beside the Prophet’s Mosque.
Al-Baqi' Al-Gharqad lies immediately east of the Prophet’s Mosque and has served as Madinah’s historic cemetery since the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Originally an area outside the city where gharqad shrubs grew, it became the burial ground of the Muslim community and remains in use today.
Thousands of the Prophet’s ﷺ companions and members of his family were buried at Al-Baqi'. Among them are the Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, the Prophet’s son Ibrahim, and several of his daughters and wives. Official Madinah tourism information states that around 10,000 companions were buried there.
The Prophet ﷺ would visit Al-Baqi' and pray for those buried there. Today, its location beside the Prophet’s Mosque makes it a natural part of a visit to central Madinah, while visitors should observe the etiquette of visiting graves and follow current access regulations.

The Prophet ﷺ visited Al-Baqi' and prayed for those buried there. Many of his companions and members of his family are buried in the cemetery. Visiting graves is an occasion to greet and pray for the deceased and to remember the Hereafter.
Al-Baqi' became the Muslim cemetery during the Prophetic era and has continued to serve as a burial ground through the centuries. As Madinah and the Prophet’s Mosque expanded, the cemetery became directly adjacent to the mosque’s surrounding area.
