Hejaz Railway Museum

In the historic Al-Anbariyah area, not far from the Prophet’s Mosque, stands Madinah’s Hejaz Railway Station, one of the most distinctive landmarks from the city’s modern history. The station served as the southern terminus of the Hejaz Railway, which extended from Damascus to Madinah and reached the city in the early twentieth century.

The railway was built to facilitate the journey of pilgrims and other travellers, significantly reducing a trip that had traditionally required long journeys by caravan. For a period, the station became one of the principal gateways through which travellers arrived in Madinah.

The historic station complex later became a museum and heritage site, preserving its distinctive architecture alongside railway-related artefacts, locomotives and carriages. Unlike Madinah’s sites associated with the Prophetic era, the museum tells a more recent chapter of the city’s story and illustrates how modern transportation transformed the journey to Madinah.
