Al-Faqir Well
A historic well in Madinah’s Al-Aliyah area, associated with the story of Salman Al-Farsi and the orchard where the Prophet ﷺ planted date palms to help him fulfil the terms of his emancipation.
Among the palm groves of Madinah’s Al-Aliyah area lies Al-Fuqair Well, also known as the Well of Salman Al-Farsi. Although the well predates Islam, its best-known story is associated with the emancipation of the companion Salman Al-Farsi.
To secure his freedom, Salman was required to provide forty ounces of gold and plant three hundred date palms. The companions helped provide the saplings, while the Prophet ﷺ personally planted them, helping Salman fulfil the conditions of his emancipation. The well and surrounding orchard remain closely associated with this story.
The historic site has since been restored, preserving the well, water channels and other features while adding visitor paths, seating, landscaping and interpretive information. Today, the experience combines the story of Salman with a glimpse into the agricultural landscape of historic Madinah.

The site is associated with the Prophet ﷺ and his companions helping Salman Al-Farsi gain his freedom, including the Prophet’s planting of date palms in the area. Its significance lies in its connection to the Prophetic biography rather than any specific devotional merit attached to visiting the well.
The well predates Islam and has been known by several names, including Al-Fuqair Well and Salman Al-Farsi Well. Located in the historic Al-Aliyah agricultural area, the site has been restored while preserving its well, channels and other historic features.
